Meet the Founder, Helen

With over 10 years of Mahjong experience, I’ve witnessed the way this game creates connection, strengthens relationships, and builds community around the table. What keeps me passionate about Mahjong isn’t just the strategy or tradition—it’s the people.

Mahjong has a way of bringing strangers together and turning them into friends. It builds confidence in beginners, challenges experienced players, and creates space for conversation, laughter, and shared moments. Some of my most meaningful memories have happened around a Mahjong table, and I knew I wanted to create a space where others could experience that too.

What began as a love of the game grew into a vision—to create a welcoming, thoughtfully designed social space where everyone feels comfortable pulling up a chair.

Birds of a Tile was built from something simple but meaningful—a love for Mahjong and the connections it creates. Mahjong has always been more than a game to me. It’s where friendships begin, where stories are shared, and where people become part of each other’s lives. I created BOAT to bring that feeling to life—a place where you can walk in, sit down at a table, and feel like you belong.

Birds of a Tile is more than a place to play—it’s a place to gather. I offer Mahjong lessons for those just getting started, open play for those who love the rhythm of the game, friendly tournaments for a little competitive energy, and private gatherings for celebrations and special moments.

I believe community should feel approachable. Whether you are learning your first Charleston, returning to the game after years away, or simply looking for a space to connect with others—you belong here.

This space means so much to me, and I can’t wait to see the connections that are made here, one table at a time.

I look forward to welcoming you to the table
